Safe, Precise Collagen Induction Therapy
Medical-Grade Microneedling in Calgary
Microneedling Calgary — also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) — is one of the most effective ways to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, soften scars, and restore a healthier overall complexion. At Elysian Laser Aesthetics in SE Calgary, I use the Twist by Dermaroller — a Health Canada-licensed, medical-grade microneedling device engineered in Germany with superior technology you won’t find in most Calgary clinics.
If you’ve been researching microneedling and want to understand what sets a medical-grade treatment apart from the spa-level pens you see everywhere, you’re in the right place.
What Is Microneedling and How Does It Work?
Microneedling works by creating thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin using fine, sterile needles. These tiny punctures trigger your body’s natural wound-healing response — the same process that produces new collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin firmness, smoothness, and elasticity.
Think of it as a targeted reset signal. Essentially, the micro-injuries are small enough that the skin repairs quickly (typically within days), but significant enough that your body responds by rebuilding the treated area with fresh, stronger tissue. As a result, over the following weeks and months, you’ll notice progressive improvement in texture, tone, and overall skin quality.
This process is backed by decades of clinical research. A 2018 review published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology confirmed that microneedling effectively stimulates collagen production and improves a wide range of skin concerns with a strong safety profile across all skin types.

Why I Chose the Dermaroller Twist Microneedling Device for My Clinic
After more than 10 years working exclusively in laser aesthetics, I’m particular about the equipment I bring into my clinic. I researched microneedling devices extensively and tried multiple brands before choosing the Twist by Dermaroller — and here’s why it stood out:
Active Needle Retrieval (ANR) Technology
The Twist is the only microneedling device that uses its motor to actively pull needles out of the skin — not just push them in. In contrast, every other microneedling pen on the market relies on passive spring-based retrieval, which can cause dragging, snagging, and unnecessary trauma. As a result, ANR means the needles spend dramatically less time inside your skin, which translates directly to less discomfort and faster healing.
150 Strokes Per Second
The Twist operates at 150 cycles per second — the fastest motor on the market. In comparison, slower devices (100–120 strokes per second) are more likely to scratch or tear the skin surface. Consequently, the Twist’s speed ensures clean, precise needle insertion every time.
Health Canada Licensed — Class II Medical Device
This isn’t a cosmetic gadget. The Twist is ISO 13485 and MDSAP certified, CE marked, and licensed by Health Canada as a Class II medical device. It meets the highest manufacturing and safety standards for medical-grade equipment — the same classification level as devices used in surgical settings.
Precision-Engineered in Germany
Every Twist needle cartridge contains 6 surgical-grade stainless steel needles that undergo 7 stages of production to guarantee 360-degree symmetry. The adjustable depth ranges from 0.25 mm to 2.5 mm, which allows me to customize your treatment precisely — shallower for delicate areas like the under-eyes, deeper for stubborn acne scars or stretch marks.
Corded Power — No Battery Fade
Unlike battery-operated pens that lose power mid-treatment (delivering inconsistent results), the Twist plugs directly into the power grid. In other words, you get consistent, full-power performance from the first pass to the last.
What Does Microneedling Treat?
Microneedling with the Twist device addresses a wide range of skin concerns:
- Fine lines and wrinkles — Stimulates collagen to restore volume and smooth texture
- Acne scars — Breaks down scar tissue and rebuilds with fresh collagen (including rolling and boxcar scars)
- Uneven skin texture — Refines pore appearance and overall surface quality
- Hyperpigmentation and sun damage — Promotes cell turnover to fade dark spots over time
- Stretch marks — Remodels scar tissue on the body (abdomen, thighs, arms)
- Loss of skin elasticity — Supports natural tightening through new elastin production
- Dull, tired-looking skin — Overall rejuvenation and improved glow
Important note: Microneedling results develop gradually.
Most clients begin to notice improvement within 2–4 weeks after their first session, with full collagen remodeling continuing for up to 3–6 months.
A series of treatments is typically recommended for optimal results.

Is Microneedling Safe for All Skin Types?
Yes — and this is one of the biggest advantages of microneedling over many laser treatments. Because microneedling creates mechanical micro-injuries (not thermal/heat-based), it carries a significantly lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Therefore, this makes it an excellent option for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I through VI), including darker skin tones that may not be ideal candidates for certain laser treatments.
I discussed this in detail in my blog post on CO2 laser vs. microneedling — if you’re trying to decide between the two, that’s a great place to start.

Can I Get Microneedling With a Tan?
A Year-Round Treatment
This is one of my favorite things about microneedling — and one of the biggest reasons I added it to my clinic: microneedling is safe on tanned skin.
Because microneedling uses mechanical needles (not light or laser energy), your skin’s melanin level doesn’t matter. In fact, a tan won’t interfere with the treatment, and the device doesn’t target pigment the way IPL or laser treatments do. However, the only exception is actively sunburned skin — if your skin is red, inflamed, or peeling from a burn, we need to wait until it’s fully healed before treating.
This makes microneedling one of the few effective collagen-building treatments you can book year-round without planning your calendar around sun avoidance. If you’re someone who travels frequently, spends time outdoors in Calgary’s summer, or simply doesn’t want to spend weeks hiding from the sun before and after a treatment — microneedling fits your lifestyle.
For my clients who love their IPL photofacials or CoolPeel treatments but can’t book them during peak summer months (when tans are unavoidable), microneedling fills that gap beautifully. You can keep your skin improving all year without skipping a season.
Post-treatment sun care still matters: Even though you can get microneedling with a tan, your skin will be more sensitive to UV for about 1–2 weeks after treatment. Mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+) and reasonable sun precautions during that healing window are essential to protect your results and prevent hyperpigmentation.

What to Expect During a Microneedling Treatment at Elysian
Here’s what a typical microneedling Calgary session looks like at my clinic:
1. Cleansing:
I thoroughly cleanse the treatment area to remove all products, makeup, and debris.
2. Numbing:
A medical-grade topical anesthetic is applied and left for approximately 30–45 minutes to ensure your comfort.
3. Treatment
Using the Twist device, I work across the treatment area in a systematic pattern. The adjustable needle depth allows me to customize intensity by zone — gentler around the eyes and forehead, more aggressive on areas with scarring or deeper texture concerns.
4. Post-Treatment Care:
I apply a soothing, hydrating product and mineral sunscreen before you leave.
Most clients describe the sensation as a light prickling or vibrating feeling — significantly more comfortable than they expected.
The Twist’s Active Needle Retrieval technology is a big part of that.
Treatment time: Approximately 60–90 minutes total (including numbing).
Microneedling Calgary: Recovery and Downtime
One of the biggest advantages of microneedling is the minimal downtime. Generally, here’s what to expect:
| Timeframe | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Skin looks pink to red (similar to a mild-moderate sunburn). May feel warm, tight, or sensitive. Pinpoint redness is normal. |
| Day 2–3 | Redness fades significantly. Skin may feel dry and tight. Minor flaking or peeling may begin. |
Most people can return to work and normal activities within 24–48 hours. I provide detailed aftercare instructions at your appointment to ensure smooth healing. You can read more about my aftercare recommendations on the pricing and treatment details page.
How Many Microneedling Sessions Do I Need?
The number of sessions depends on your specific skin concerns and goals:
| Concern | Typical Sessions |
|---|---|
| General skin rejuvenation / glow | 3–4 sessions |
| Fine lines and texture | 3–6 sessions |
| Acne scars (mild to moderate) | 4–6 sessions |
During your free consultation, I’ll assess your skin and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your goals
— no generic “packages” or pressure to commit before you’re ready.

Microneedling Calgary — Frequently Asked Questions
Does microneedling hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as a vibrating or prickling feeling — not overly painful. I apply a medical-grade topical anesthetic before every treatment, and the Twist’s Active Needle Retrieval technology minimizes discomfort significantly compared to standard microneedling pens. Some areas like forehead are more uncomforable than cheeks, chin and neck.
How long does it take to see results from microneedling?
You may notice a subtle glow within the first week as redness resolves, but real collagen remodeling takes time. Typically, most clients see noticeable improvement in texture and tone within 2–4 weeks, with continued improvement over 3–6 months. Additionally, a series of treatments delivers the best cumulative results.
Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?
Absolutely. Microneedling pairs well with treatments like IPL photofacials (for pigmentation) or CoolPeel CO2 (for surface resurfacing). I can help you build a treatment plan that combines modalities for the best overall results. Treatments are spaced appropriately to allow full healing between sessions.
Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?
Yes — microneedling is one of the safest skin rejuvenation options for all skin types, including Fitzpatrick types 1-4. Because it uses mechanical needles (not heat), the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is significantly lower than with most laser treatments. If you have darker skin and want to address texture, scars, or fine lines, microneedling is an excellent choice. Darker skin types should still prep their skin with hydroquinone cream for a few weeks prior to prevent post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, this is available at any pharmacy. Daily high PF sunscreen post treatment is mandatory.
Can I get microneedling if I have a tan?
Yes — unlike IPL and most laser treatments, microneedling is completely safe on tanned skin. The needles create mechanical micro-channels and don’t interact with melanin, so your tan won’t affect the treatment or your results. The only exception is actively sunburned or peeling skin, which needs to heal first. This makes microneedling one of the few collagen-building treatments you can book year-round without worrying about sun exposure beforehand. You will need to be diligent with mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+) for 1–2 weeks after treatment to protect your healing skin.
Who should NOT get microneedling?
Microneedling is not recommended if you have active acne, active skin infections, open wounds in the treatment area, or are currently using Accutane (or have used it within the past 6 months). Pregnant and breastfeeding clients should also wait. If you have a history of keloid scarring or certain skin conditions, we’ll discuss your options during your free consultation.
What’s the difference between the Twist and other microneedling pens?
The Twist by Dermaroller is the only microneedling device with Active Needle Retrieval — the motor actively pulls needles out of the skin instead of relying on springs. It also runs at 150 strokes per second (vs. 100–120 for most pens), is Health Canada licensed as a Class II medical device, and is engineered and manufactured in Germany. It’s not the same as the pens you’ll find in most spas.
Why are some Calgary clinics offering microneedling for cheaper prices such as $99?
If you’re seeing microneedling advertised for $99 or less, it’s worth asking what device is being used. Health Canada-licensed, medical-grade microneedling devices like the Twist, SkinPen, and Dermapen cost thousands of dollars and use precision-engineered, sterile, single-use cartridges. At those price points, a $99 treatment wouldn’t cover the cost of the cartridge and numbing cream — let alone a trained practitioner’s time.
In many cases, ultra-cheap microneedling is performed with unregulated pen devices purchased online for under $100. These devices are not Health Canada licensed, may not have sterile single-use cartridges, and often operate at lower speeds that can drag and tear the skin rather than cleanly puncturing it. That’s the difference between a controlled collagen induction treatment and someone poking your face with an unregulated gadget.
I’d rather charge a fair price for a treatment I’m confident in than cut corners on the equipment that’s touching your skin.
